An Ellis Island Christmas

--Coming To America--
Written from the perspective of a little girl, this story gives an excellent idea of what it was like for the immigrants who came to America during the years, 1892 to 1924. This is the story of six-year old Krysia Petrowski's voyage to America.

Krysia's father was already in America to make a new life for his family. When he had a job and a home, he sent for his wife, daughter and two sons. The decision to leave Poland, their homeland was difficult; leaving behind family and friends was not an easy thing to do. The children could only take necessary items and each child was allowed to bring just one toy. Their clothes, blankets, shoes and toys were knotted up in a sheet to be carried over the shoulder. Krysia had a problem choosing between her two beloved dolls. She took Basha because she was the smaller of the two dolls and would take up less space.

After leaving their village, it took the family four days of walking to arrive at the port where a large steamship was there to take them across the ocean. The difficult sea voyage involved poor sanitation, sickness and lack of decent food. After about fourteen days, the passengers finally view the Statue of Liberty and depart at Ellis Island on Christmas Eve.

On Ellis Island, the immigrants went through many inspections, which included medical examinations for each family member. The paperwork and examination usually took three to five hours to complete. Passing the examinations meant that the immigrants were allowed into the country. Those who did not have the proper papers or failed their medicals, were delayed for days or even months and could be sent back to their original countries.

This well written and carefully illustrated little book is ideal for children who are studying the history of America or the story of their own family.

Excellent
The audio cassette was excellent. I am a native of Georgetown, sothis is nothing new to me, however, I am trying to introduce my two small children to the sound of Gullah and they love it. I asked my daughter did she understand what was being said and she stated, "yes Mom, it's just english spoken with a dialect." I, as well as my family really enjoyed this. Please give us more. Thank you.

King Island Christmas
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Jean Rogers
Average review score:

The story of an Eskimo island's Christmas
In addition to being a wonderful neighbor, Jean Rogers is an incredible writer of children's books. This book transports the reader (of any age) to a world which, for most of us, is just a far-off land. It welcomes us to the beauty of Eskimo customs and celebrations, and warms the heart with the Christmas spirit. It is a definite must-buy for parents or friends of children who will grow up sensitive to the world around them

Nuclear Nativity: Rituals of Renewal and Empowerment in the Marshall Islands
Published in Hardcover by Northern Illinois Univ Pr (June, 1997)
Author: Laurence Marshall Carucci
Average review score:

Marshall Islands Rituals
In Nuclear Nativity, Carucci explores the rituals, customs, and meanings of the Kurijmoj festival. Feasts, competitive games, speeches, dances, songs of apocalypse, and gestures of extraordinary generosity are among the means by which Enewetak and Ujelang people celebrate the festival. Carucci thoroughly investigates the empowering aspects of these ritual devices. He gives special attention to the array of valu ables and intricate scenarios of exchange - including food and money, speeches and songs - and illuminates the ways that people create histories of Kurijmoj tracing the festival to its ancient or Christian sources depending on their positions or status in the community. Carucci's book will engage Pacific anthropologists, ethnographers, and scholars interested in the anthropology of religion and ritual.

Christmas Holiday
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (05 December, 2000)
Author: W. Somerset Maugham
Average review score:

passably good
The ease and the smoothness of Somerset Maugham's style make reading this book enjoyable. However the story itself is just OK, nothing extraordinary. However keeping in mind that it's a preWWII novel, there are some intelligent political remarks and astute psychological analysis of the charachters

a very enjoyable read
Although this may not be the masterpiece of 20th literature, I have to admit that it was a very absorbing read. As we follow Charly, the well-bred perfect English gentlemen, through his week long vacation in Paris, we become ensnared in the life story of the prostitute he befriends and her web of friends and acquaintances. The story itself is interesting in its own right, but what really makes the narrative flow is how Maugham lets us peer into the psyches of various characters, all from different social strata. My personal favorite was Berger, Lydia's husband who despite his rogue behavior was one of the more memorable (and even likable) characters. Simon, Charly's friend was drawn perhaps a bit too extremely, but Maugham does use that to some effect. In any case, a fun read and a good story.

Maughm - Storytelling at its best.
Maughm has the unusual talent of baring truths about human nature in a most simplified fashion. His insights into the complexities of human relationships reveal his incredible talent with words. Maughm has been my absolute favorite writer for years...His unpretentious writing style reveals intelligence in the most positive way, extending out to anyone who loves to hear a wonderful story.
"Christmas Holiday" begins and ends in one exhilirating whirlwind, without ever a moment of slight boredom. Maughm writes with a fluidity that cannot be matched by any other writer. He is simply the best at his art - storytelling.
